Tuatua and Pipi are really good shells that we can harvest and eat in New Zealand.
They are easy to harvest on sandy beaches when tides are falling. Shells go up to the surface looking for water and we can catch them then!
There is a limit on how many we can get each day depending on the region - we can check NZ Fishing Rules for that.
After catching them we should put them in a bucket with sea water for a few hours, so they breathe and spit out the sand.
To cook them first check they are alive, to do so we can poke them and if they close they are good.
Put a couple of centimeters of sea water in the pan and steam them until they open.
